You are a YouTuber with 50k subscribers and what started as a side hustle has now become your full-time job. You are sitting in an airport lobby, and to pass the time you try to strike up a conversation with the lady sitting adjacent to you.
The following might be the hypothetical conversation between you and her:
You: Hello! What’s your name?
She: Hi! My name is Ms X. And you are?
You: I am Mr Y. So Ms X, what do you do for a living?
She: I am a doctor. What about you?
You: Well, I am now a YouTuber.
The moment you uttered the word “You Tuber”, she will fire you with a familiar question-
‘How much do you earn!’
You are not surprised as she is not the first person to come up with this question even if your conversation has not gone beyond greetings. Whether someone is a Blogger or an Instagram influencer, asking earning questions has become a pain in the ass.
I try to figure out the reason and the reason can be, firstly anyone can be an influencer or a YouTuber, you don’t need any qualification to open a YouTube channel. Hence many people are themselves considering the side hustle.
Secondly, many influencers have blurred the line between business and personal life which doesn’t happen in the majority of professions. To get views and followers they have shared every moment of their personal life. so people think its quite normal to ask influencers about their earnings
However, it is quite annoying for the influencer community which takes their work as important as any 9–5 job and has maintained a strict distinction between their private and public life and scorn on the probing questions.
Maybe in near future, being an Instagrammer or influencer will become more mainstream and people would realize that just like any other professionals it is not ethical to ask influencers about their earnings.
