So, if you’re looking to become a recognized knowledgeable thought leader, an inspiring source, either for your business or as an individual, this article is for you. It identifies 9 ways to become a thought leader in any industry. Think of this as your personal brand marketing strategy!
But before I get to it, let me start by defining what I mean by ‘Thought Leadership’.
We all have different definitions of what ‘Thought Leadership’ actually is, but in its simplest form, it refers to the way someone is perceived by their industry niche.
Thought leaders are not people who are always right or make decisions for the masses, and they aren’t celebrities. Rather, they are individuals who have achieved a level of influence over a particular niche.
OK, now the definition is out of the way, how can anyone become a thought leader? Well, it’s not as hard as you may think! Here’s what you need to do.
1. Establish a personal brand
The key to building a personal brand is to have a strong online platform for sharing your unique point of view, your expertise, and your ideas. The trick here is to use your voice to communicate your ideas, influence others, establish credibility, and develop meaningful relationships and trust.
To do this effectively, you need to think about yourself in terms of a brand, just like any business.
You have a persona, a voice, and a face, a character with a personality, which you develop over time through consistent messages and behavior. In fact, if you think about it, it’s simply a form of self-presentation.
There are many ways to achieve this, but perhaps the easiest and most effective is to just be yourself. It’s how you behave, communicate and interact with people, and the key is to be consistent, genuine, and authentic.
2. Start a blog
Blogging requires little investment or time and is a great addition to your personal marketing armory! All you need is a laptop, some inspiration, and a desire to communicate your thoughts and opinions to the world.
By blogging, you’re basically creating insightful, quality content that others will read and share. It’s a long-term, sustainable tactic because they come back to your blog to read new content, develop their understanding, and interact with you. Once they have a relationship with you, they’re going to trust you more and spend more money with you.
3. Establish a social media presence
Social media should play a big part in your overall plan. You want to show your target audience that you’re just as accessible as they are. It also allows you to keep up with your fans and followers, interact with them, engage with them, and establish your leadership profile. It’s not only a way for you to show your expertise, but also your human side and be more relatable. Again, providing insightful content is essential.
4. Connect with other influencers
This is a really simple, yet often forgotten tactic that every entrepreneur should implement.
Think about all the big thought leaders and influencers in your industry. Who do they associate with? What are they known for?
Then, by using Social Media to reach out to them, you’ll connect with the ‘names’ in your industry. You’ll have access to people who you wouldn’t have otherwise been able to meet, it will get your name known more widely in the right company, and result in more opportunities!
5. Network at conferences
Attending business conference events and being an active participant in your chosen niche will help establish yourself as a thought leader. You will gain a lot of knowledge and build relationships with peers in your niche.
Another option is to consider becoming a speaker at business conferences and trade shows. Not only does it add to your credibility as a thought leader, but it can be incredibly lucrative.
6. Be a podcast guest
Podcasts are a great way to communicate, broaden your online reach, and establish yourself as a leader.
Listeners are drawn to podcasts because they’re easy and convenient to listen to at any time. As a thought leader, they offer a great platform to showcase your knowledge and ideas.
Podcasters are always on the lookout for guests. This means more opportunities for interviews as well as wider visibility on podcasts platforms such as Soundcloud, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.
7. Present your own podcast
Another great option to establish yourself as a thought leader is to host your own podcast.
If this sounds like something you want to do, there are two key things you need to think about.
The first is what your show is really about and the second is what format you’re going to use. There are lots of different podcast formats available, for example, podcasts with guests, in-depth interviews, conversations, and monologues. If you go down the guest route for your podcast, invite other thought leaders to be interviewed. This will not only make your podcast more interesting, but it will also help you build your connections!
8. Become a guest blogger
Guest blogging is another opportunity to establish your credentials as a thought leader. It allows you to connect with those who may be interested in what you have to say.
A benefit of being a guest blogger on a reputable site is that it gives you wider exposure in your area of expertise. Your blog post will rank highly in search engines, and it will help you establish a strong reputation.
When writing a guest blog, you should offer knowledge, opinion, or insight into a specific issue or problem your target audience experiences. Most importantly, you must create quality content that your audience will find authentic and valuable.
9. Become an author
Writing a book is another powerful tool that presents a great opportunity to demonstrate your ability and build trust in your field. It gives instant credibility and is a great way to stand out from the crowd. It makes you an authority and gives you a chance to share your knowledge and expertise with others.
Establishing yourself as a thought leader and becoming a go-to source in your niche can be very profitable in many ways. The most important things to remember are to keep your content fresh and relevant, become a consistent presence, and demonstrate your knowledge and ability. Doing this will get you the results you want: recognition as a thought leader, and through it, increased traffic, new subscribers, leads, and customers.
